Dao-Dao is a name I adopted for these instruments long ago, and it has stuck with me. They are originally from The Philippines where they are known as Balingbing or Devil Chasers. They are made from a double joint of bamboo that has been partially split and tuned to itself. They tend to elicit gales of laughter from my students, and one musician friend likened their sound to the screaming Praying Mantis. I feel that they are the mutant lovechild of Stevie Wonder's Clavinet and a frog. They can be heard in combination with Water Drums on the Water Drums' track, but here they bark in their own naked glory.
